FAQs
What is a theoretical orientation in therapy?
1
A theoretical orientation is the framework that shapes how you understand client problems as a therapist and how you choose interventions (for example, CBT, psychodynamic, humanistic, systemic, and integrative approaches).
How do I find my theoretical orientation?
2
You can find your theoretical orientation by reflecting on how you conceptualize clients, what you think drives change, and which interventions you naturally rely on—or by taking a structured quiz like this one!

This quiz is a structured self-assessment. It’s meant to clarify patterns in how you think and work clinically—not replace supervision, training, or program requirements. To assess psychotherapeutic domains, it incorporates research in psychotherapy on the common factors, therapist stance, and the therapeutic relationship. To assess personality domains, it incorporates research from both psychology (Big 5 personality traits) and consumer science (brand personality traits).
What does this have to do with marketing myself as a therapist?

Consumers of intangible services like psychotherapy experience a lot of anxiety pre-purchase because it’s hard to gauge whether the purchase will be worth the investment. They can’t test-drive therapy before they try it! To help alleviate that anxiety, we need to “increase their predictive capacity” - we need to help them predict what therapy with you will be like so they can decide it’s worth it. To do that, you need to be able to describe what you do and how you do it. Knowing your Therapist Archetype can help!
